Thinking About Book Recommendations

Today, I had three books recommended to me.
I love it when that happens.
I hate it when that happens.

I think a book recommendation is a magic, personal gift. Kind of this: “I think I know you well enough to recommend a book to you — a good book, a favorite book, a book that matters to me book.” A book recommendation is almost a kind of personal sharing…

I think a book recommendation is something of a burden. If you recommend a book to me, I’m kind of obligated to read it now.

I lean more toward the “gift” view, but there are times when I try to avoid eye contact with someone who has recommended a book to me — and I have not taken the time to read it.

Today’s recommendations included “It’s Your Ship,” and “The Hard Thing About The Hard Thing,” and “Everything is Obvious (When You Know The Answer).”

I made a couple of my own recommendations: The Second Machine Age, and a few older books — Future Shock and Megatrends and The Popcorn Report..

I really do love it when someone recommends a book to me – even when I only carve out the time to read a few of the sample pages. The more you read, the more you know, the more you connect with other readers – and, of course, the more you grow.

So, what have you read today? What books have you recommended today? And, what have you learned — or taught?
