Medium.Com; Microsoft; Keep Learning – Not-So-Random Thoughts for a Saturday Morning

A few things for a Saturday morning…  all unrelated (or, maybe very related…)

#1 — I have just discovered Medium.com.  I suspect I’m late to the game on this one.  (Medium was founded by Evan Williams, a founder at both Blogger.com and Twitter).  I delved deeply into their “Top 100 Posts from Last Month” page.

They have a great! feature – they tell you upfront how long it takes to read an article.  (I’m sure some read faster than others – but, still…).  And it is wide-ranging.  I spent an hour on the site.  Loved it.  Bookmarked it.  I will check on this “Top 100” list every month.

About Medium:

What are we trying to do with Medium?
  Now that we’ve made sharing information virtually effortless, how do we increase the depth of understanding, while also creating a level playing field that encourages great ideas coming from anywhere? In short, we think that words (still) matter, so we built a better system for sharing them.
{and:  With Twitter, you are allowed to tweet 140 characters. Then, on your blog, you can post articles that are thousands of words. What does this do? It leaves room for something in between – something “medium-sized” – pun intended.}

I could tell you all the articles I read—nearly all were from the “Top 100” page.  But, then, I don’t know which ones you would like.  But I especially liked:

The Don’t Be an Asshole Rule — Startup 101: Decency
and
In times of change, make tires:  Innovation is not a binary choice between the old and the new. The answer is often to contribute to evolution — by making parts that work in both worlds.
and
What the F*^k are you doing?:  When a mentor really changes your life, and they didn’t even know it.

#2 — The internets are exploding this morning with articles about why Ballmer “failed” at Microsoft, and what Microsoft needs to do now.  I think my recent post, which did not mention Microsoft, has plenty to say about the Microsoft dilemma:  The One Non-Negotiable for Business Success is this! – (Seen Any Wang Word Processor’s Lately?)

#3 — If there is one thing I keep believing, and finding reinforced in a multitude of ways, it is this:  life-long learning is the survival skill of this era.  We’ve all got to keep learning!

Have a good weekend.
