If you have lost a loved one to cancer, I am honored to carry his or her name on an index card with me as I walk my laps at the 2012 Relay for Life event in Garland on May 5-6, sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
Please send me his or her name, and I will carry it with me on a lap. At the end of my laps, I will burn these cards and extinguish the flame as a symbol of our hope that we will soon extinguish this horrible disease. I will then offer a special prayer in their memory.
If you would like to contribute to this cause, I will match the amount of the donation you make. Within 24 hours, you will see my matching contribution in his or her honor in the scrolling list on my page. A contribution on your behalf is totally optional – I will carry the name of your loved one regardless of whether or not you donate.

My mother died of breast cancer in 1982. For the past several years, I have walked in the Relay for Life event as a member of the New Directions Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church in Garland. I typically walk my laps at the most inconvenient time possible, such as 3:00 a.m., in order to symbolize the inconvenience and pain that so many victims experienced as they suffered with this disease.
In 2011, thanks to all the contributions, I was the top individual fund-raiser for this event in the Garland area. But this is not about me – it is about honoring the memory of lost ones, helping to destroy this killer for future generations, and celebrating those who have survived it.
In 2012, I am doubling my goal from 2011. I am posting a goal of $2,400. With your help, I can get there.
I want you to know that I believe this program is working! Each year, the number of participants in the emotional “survivor lap” grows, meaning that the dollars that we contribute are being put to use to save individuals who are afflicted with this disease.
When I take part in the Relay for Life, and when you contribute to this cause, we are helping the American Cancer Society save lives by:
- Helping people stay well by helping them take steps to prevent cancer or detect it early, when it’s most treatable
- Helping people get wellby being in their corner around the clock to guide them through every step of their cancer experience
- Finding curesby funding groundbreaking research that helps us understand cancer’s causes, determine how best to prevent it and discover new ways to cure it
- Fighting back by working with lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and rally communities worldwide to join the fight
