Becoming Steve Jobs; Robert Putnam’s Our Kids – Our Selections for the May 1 First Friday Book Synopsis

We have now officially begun our 18th year of the First Friday Book Synopsis. with a wonderful morning at our April 3 gathering. Karl Krayer presented his synopsis of The Opposite of Spoiled, and I presented my synopsis of Bold (kind of a companion volume to Exponential Organizations – a one-two punch).

For our May 1 First Friday Book Synopsis gathering, we have selected two important books. One, by the profound and substantive Robert Putnam (well-known for his classic work, Bowling Alone). Kart Krayer will present a synopsis of his new book, Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis by Robert Putnam, (2015).

{How’s this for a distant memory?  I presented the Robert Putnam book, Bowling Alone, at the September, 2000 First Friday Book Synopsis.  This was a while ago — well before we started recording our presentations.).

And, there is a lot of buzz about the new unauthorized, but highly-respected, biography of Steve Jobs. It is described as a needed addition to, even corrective to, Walter Isaacson’s authorized Steve Jobs. This new book is Becoming Steve Jobs: The Evolution of a Reckless Upstart into a Visionary Leader by Brent Schlender and Rick Tetzeli (2015). I was a fan of Isaacson’s volume (apparently much more so than the vocal cheerleaders of this new book who believe that Mr. Isaacson got it “wrong”). I’m just beginning my reading of this new book, but from all that I have read, it apparently argues that there was a more “human” Steve Jobs in his later years.

(Note: I presented my synopsis of the Walter Isaacson biography, Steve Jobs, back at the January, 2012 First Friday Book Synopsis. My synopsis of that book, with my handout and the audio of my presentation, is available at our companion site, 15minutebusinessbooks.com).

So, Robert Putnam, and another close look at Steve Jobs… You will want to come join us at our May 1 First Friday Book Synopsis!

Mark it on your calendar. (You’ll be able to register soon from this web site for our May event).
